Main St.

Public Art Chattanooga, a division of the city's Parks and Recreation Department, recently won a Bright Idea award for the "On the Fence" series' installations along Main Street. Upon first hearing, the plan to utilize art on the unsightly fences along Main Street as one tool for creating a "rebirth" of the area seemed like a bright idea and, well, it was.

It was thoroughly discussed at numerous meetings. The ideas, costs and invite list adjusted as the plan developed. The contest was held, entries chosen and installations began. Once installed, the public voted on the winner of the competition, and the ribbon ceremony took place.

As with all bright ideas, there is a learning curve. In this case, it was related to the use of materials and engineering requirements that can withstand the force of nature and mischievous passersby. Pieces and parts have fallen or blown off, faded away or are covered with vines. One installation has been removed and many of the remaining ones are looking very similar to the worn fences they were intended to hide. What remains is the faded memory of the potential of a bright idea.

On a recent arts tour of the area for several out of state travel writers, a writer from Kansas City tripped on several stalks of bamboo that lay on the sidewalk on Rossville Avenue. The explanation that the stalks, which had almost taken her to her knees, were actually intended to enhance the area, not harm her, did not impress. On another tour, visitors traveling past the clothing line installation laughed and asked if someone had really hung their dirty clothes out to dry.

Nonetheless, the project did, for a moment, brighten Main Street and bring a sense of community.

As a property owner on Main Street, I have invested, and will continue to invest, my time, business skills and money into ensuring the revitalization of the Main Street corridor is a success. I am also a staunch supporter of the arts in Chattanooga, dedicating one third of my time to advocating the value of art in our lives. Public art and nature create the face of Chattanooga — they are what people see first upon visiting Chattanooga and acclaim when they leave.

And as a whole, the Southside community is very appreciative of the Lyndhurst Foundation and Public Art Chattanooga for their innovative thinking and contributions to revitalize Main Street.

But some property owners feel as though the weathered fences have served their purpose and need to be maintained or removed before the area begins to look as though it's moving in the opposite direction.

Winter can be rather quiet when it comes to development, but when spring comes along things begin to happen. That is exactly what the Southside experienced these last six months as entrepreneurs have taken on new ventures and invested in our community.

If you shop local, you'll love these new places to visit:

The Hart Gallery
110 E. Main St.

Hart Gallery is a not-for-profit entity that offers homeless and other non-traditional artists an opportunity to create and sell their artwork. They also supply art materials and mentoring to other nonprofit community organizations who can provide a space for their clients to create works of art that will be sold through the gallery at affordable prices. Money from art sales will be returned to the artist and the agency for their benefit.

Planet Altered
48 E. Main St.

Planet Altered offers a beneficial service to our local community by connecting artists with others who also appreciate and value creativity. Recently they started a monthly dinner centered around giving a micro-grant to one of three artists.

Front Gallery
1800 Rossville Ave.

A gallery/working studio space that also houses Chenoweth-Halligan Studios. Jan Chenoweth and Roger Halligan, residents of Jefferson Heights, recently moved their studios from the Northshore to this Southside location. They provide space for additional artists to create as well as open their gallery for special exhibitions.

Haskel Sears Design
1800 Rossville Ave.

Matt Sears has a passion for creating pieces constructed around the nature and possibilities of wood. Each custom design unites substance and style, creating pieces that connect with their owners at both functional and emotional levels.

Link 41
217 E. Main St.

Trae Moore and Tom Montague partnered up to create fresh and smoked hand-crafted sausages that they sell weekly at Sunday's Chattanooga Market, Wednesday's Main Street Market as well limited hours at their retail location.

Townsend Atelier
201 W. Main St.

As purveyors of unique mold-making, casting and patina products, Peggy and Stan Townsend have supplied materials to sculptors, architectural and frame restorers, hobbyists, jewelers, taxidermists, model and prototype makers, candy makers, soap makers, candle makers, doll makers, puppet makers and more. In their new space they have already begun conducting workshops, seminars and classes for all types and levels of artists and craftspeople.

The Camp House
1427 Williams St.

Once solely the studios of Cessna Decosimo and Elizabeth Rogers, the space is now also home to the Camp House. Camp House is a multi-use space that includes Wind Farm Coffee Bar, which also serves breakfast and lunch, and Craft Social Workshop, which offers single craft workshops and music and open mic on Thursday nights. They welcome people to access their free Wi-Fi, hang out in comfy chairs and meet new friends. The space is open for private parties as well.

Metro Real Estate
601 E. They specialize in residential sales and listings.

Pilates on the South Side
1427 Williams St. Unit 11

Pilates on the Southside is a fully equipped pilates studio offering private lessons from Candy Kinsey, a certified pilates instructor, and owner of the studio.

Deep Roots Landscaping
1435 Park St.

Cannon Jones recently relocated his landscaping business to this new location.

Mainly Antiques
Corner of Main Street and Central Avenue

Steven and Martha have a select grouping of antiques, imported European furniture and paintings that rotate, so you'll have to stop by often to see what's new.

Get Built Chattanooga CrossFit
203 E. Main St.

Offers great workout opportunities with a personal trainer or in groups. You'll know when you've arrived at their location when you see the large metal structure that looks like a sculpture outside their building.

Velo Coffee Roasters
509 E. Main St.

Velo Coffee Roasters is a Chattanooga-owned and operated micro-roaster, specializing in small-batch, specialty roasts. Another fun little tidbit: they are the city's only bicycle-powered coffee roaster. You can buy the beans at Main Street Market, Brainerd Market, Chattanooga Market, Niedlov's and various local restaurants. Or have them bike-delivered to your door.

Merchants on Main
607 Main St.

Twelve antique and decor dealers, formerly located at The Galleries at Southside, are in the process of relocating to this new location. Expect to also see a deli/bar/restaurant pop up soon after the galleries open.

Chrysalis
1401 14th St.

A quaint shop offering unique gifts, cards, holiday and home decor.

And keep an eye out for the next new businesses opening soon:

CrashPad

An uncommon hostel in the heart of downtown, combining the affordability and camaraderie of a hostel with the charm and cleanliness of a boutique hotel to serve as a base camp and community hub for adventurous travelers.

The Hair Lounge

This new salon will soon open at the Corner of Main and Market streets.

Enzo's Market

Yes, it is still happening! Main St.

What is best described as a potpourri of opportunities for artist to share their talent, Planet Altered is the newest addition to the creative arts community on Main Street.

Linda and John Sines shared a vision to be a part of the creative surge on the Southside, so they spent their time and money on their heart's desire to create a wildly colorful space in which others could explore, teach and nurture their own creativity. Their ultimate hope is that the community will embrace their gift and grow it into an arts center that meets the needs of the community.

Along with spaces devoted to exhibiting and selling works of art, they have created the perfect atmosphere to hold workshops, classes, book clubs, film previews, jam sessions, storytelling — virtually any kind of community gathering one can imagine.

Two local artists, Charlie Newton and Katie Ward Knutson, have already taken advantage of the newly completed space. Newton is teaching several classes, including Evening Shadows on Main, a sketching class and intensive drawing course, while Knutson held Art Days on Main instructing elementary-aged children in creating art.

"Working with Linda and Jean at Planet Altered was very nice, they were so accommodating and helpful," Knutson said. "Linda offered her own supplies and time to help me set up. The vision they have for the place is inspiring, and I'm glad to know there is a place in the neighborhood that I can have small classes and not worry about huge costs and work with very warm inviting folks."

Jean Huddleston, the manager of Planet Altered, says she would love to have more artists like Newton and Knutson participate. She has extended an open invitation to artists in the community who'd like to become involved.

"Whether you are a visual or performing artist, a painter, potter, sculptor, jewelry maker or art instructor, Planet Altered is here to help you connect with the community" she said.

In keeping with alignment with their support of artists and their belief in Fair Trade, Jean said they "provide an opportunity for local artists to sell and showcase their art at Planet Altered by offering a 20-80 split. Yes, that's 20 percent for us and 80 percent for you."

Whether you stop by for a class or just to enjoy a cup of fresh brewed coffee, use the free Wi-Fi and partake in great conversation, Planet Altered hopes the community will "share the space to the benefit of everyone as Southside grows in arts and connections."

Planet Altered is located at 48 E.

Email from Andraé McGary:

Last month, we held the first District 8 Gathering meeting. To best accommodate busy schedules, we held the event on two days and had an encouraging number of concerned citizens voice their ideas about what will make a better district for all of us. You provided great ideas. Now its time to take action by identifying an action point you can help move forward.

I humbly ask everyone to focus on at least one action point. As promised, I will work alongside you to accomplish our goals. I am convinced our mutual accountability to each other will ensure our success.

For those who were not able to attend as well as for those who need a refresher, here is a summary of the two District 8 Gathering meetings:

Attendance

At the 2010 District 8 "Gathering" there were residents/neighbors in attendance from:
Adamstown Community
Big Brother/Big Sister of Chattanooga
Clifton Hills Neighborhood Association
Cowart Place/Southside
Fellowship of Christian Athletes
Ferger Place Historical Organization
Fortwood Neighborhood Association
Highland Park Neighborhood Association
MLK Neighborhood Association
Oak Grove Neighborhood Association
Olivet Baptist Church
Rainbow Coalition PUSH
Ridgedale Neighborhood Association
STAND
Westside Neighborhood Association
Wheeler Avenue Neighborhood Association
The Yellow Deli
Local Political Candidates & Other Concerned Citizens

Goal

The Goal of the Gathering was to identify the most pressing issues concerning all sections of the District. We tried to rally ALL persons in the District to action in order to work together to solve these pressing issues and to create a better District. Though we are many, and have many diverse issues, we are one District. I do pray that we will all work together on the issues mentioned below since we are only as strong as our weakest link.

Process

We scheduled two meetings to accommodate people's schedules (one on Saturday 4-24-10 & another on Monday 4-26-10). Individuals were divided into small groups. Each individual within the group identified their top concerns. Individuals spoke in turn until all concerns were listed or until time elapsed. Members within the groups then voted on the top concerns. To do this, each person within the group was given small dots. They placed the dots next to each item that they thought were the most pressing. By voting, the group identified the top concerns of the group. After voting, each group presented to wider group their top concerns. After this, participants were divided into groups again and asked to identify action points to help solve the top concerns listed. Each person was given opportunity to identify action points. After each person had spoken, participants were asked to vote on the action points that were best able to address the issue.

District 8 Priorities

Top Issues from the "Gathering" are:

1. Crime/Safety

2. Neighborhood Beautification/Services*

3. Business Development (See Note below beside this Issue)

4. Parental Guidance/Youth Encouragement*

*The ranking of the issues in the Saturday Meeting was 1. Crime; 2. Parental Guidance; and 3. Neighborhood Beautification.

The ranking from Monday's meeting was 1. Crime/Safety; 2. Neighborhood Services; 3. Business Development; and 4. Youth Encouragement.

Where there was overlap in some of the issues, a careful consolidation was done, but rest assured every mentioned issue will be addressed in due time.

Action Points

If you desire to sign up for the Chair Person for any of the below Action Plans, please contact Councilman McGary by June 12th (423 400-2782 mcgary_a@chattanooga.gov).

Crime/Safety

1. Ken and Ellen Hays, who have resided on Mitchell Avenue for the past three years, sent out a rather simple invitation via email announcing the event and arranged for the horse and carriage rides.

Then they did something that made it even more inviting, they had the invitation translated into Arabic to more personally invite some of the newer neighbors in their community.

As I arrived promptly at 4 p.m., the park was already full and a quick scan told me I was about to enjoy a very exciting afternoon. After waving to several friends, I quickly approached a group of three women sitting on a bench and introduced myself. In turn, Eman, Sena and Henna returned the favor and pointed out their children. Their daughters were on the swings while their husbands and sons were running around the small park enticing others to come kick the soccer ball around; within minutes, there were more than 30 legs swirling past us.

Once the game settled down, I met the men. Attempting to retain all their names proved a little bit more challenging than the women's and my variations on pronunciation proved very entertaining to their ears.

As I spoke with each person, I learned that some had moved here from southern Iraq and Baghdad several years ago, while others had just relocated a mere three months ago from Uzbekistan. Among the neighbors were also those who came from Guatemala, Congo and Germany. The Fort Negley neighborhood, which takes up no more than several blocks on the Southside, actually boasts immigrants from more than seven nations.

"The uniqueness of our neighborhood enriches all of us," Ellen Hays said. "When you hear about diversity it generally refers to two different racial groups. In Fort Negley, it means people of many different ages, races, ethnic and land of origin backgrounds living together. When we play or sit in our park we all have one thing in common: our love of living in this very special place on earth."

When the dinner bell rang — well not really, more like when the food was uncovered — all nationalities were well represented and an international feast began. Our Uzbek friends shared manti, a steamed dumpling filled with lamb and onions, and triangle shaped meat pastries known as shashlik. Our Iraqi neighbors shared a biryani rice dish with almonds and potatoes, dolmas (stuffed grape leaves), a large flatbread called khubz served with hummus and a wonderfully delicate dessert made with sweet vermicelli and nuts. Alongside these fabulously flavored dishes appeared the traditional southern fare of creamed corn, barbeque chicken, macaroni salad and my own deviled eggs.

Everyone enjoyed tasting and sharing bites with one another, I even overheard someone asking for a copy of one of the recipes ... we may need the translator’s services again.

As I left the park, I watched the neighbors intermingle in groups, some sitting in a circle on the ground, and I couldn’t imagine a better place on earth to be than Fort Negley Park on this one Sunday afternoon.
